If it is a ripped file, it is probably in .avi format. So if it was ripped from a BR disk in HD, it will play back in HD. You don’t need a BR disk drive installed.

Your computer’s cpu is overheating. Games and videos usually work the processor really hard and generate a lot of heat. So what most likely might be causing your computer to not cool off adaquatly is that your fan has too much dust in it and needs a cleaning. Other causes can include vent obstructions and operating on flimsy surfaces. Make sure that your fan vents are not obstructed by anything such as a sticker and when your laptop is running always keep it on firm surfaces like desks not flimsy surfaces like beds. If you don’t hear the fan running at all or none of the other advise has worked your fan may need replacement.
